A star for Nobody’s Secret from Publisher’s Weekly

February 24th, 2013, 6:42 pm

The time between sending out the advance review copies (ARCs) and getting that first big review can be nervewracking. Reviews are arbitrary and sometimes the reviewer just doesn’t like what you are trying to do. Or thinks you are taking liberties with a famous person… But sometimes the reviewer not only “gets it” but also loves the concept.

Why I appreciate Chronicle Books…

February 7th, 2013, 12:36 am

There are actually a zillion ways I appreciate my publisher, Chronicle Kids –I could go on about my terrific editor, Victoria Rock, the great marketing team led by Lara Starr, or tell you how every interaction I’ve had with anyone at Chronicle has been fun and positive. But the number one reason I love Chronicle? They take my stories and create a book that is a visual and tactile pleasure.  They think about every detail. What happens if the jacket gets lost? Let’s put a cool pattern on the hardcover so it still looks good.  Is this the kind of book that deserves a whole page for two words? Yes – and “The End” looked great for Prisoners in the Palace.  Is this a book about an aviator? Shouldn’t the journal entries look like a pilot’s log?  (Promise the Night).  And the covers! They work ridiculously hard on every detail and each cover has been surprising and beautiful.

Not like this hack job someone did on Anne of Green Gables!

To hear Josie Levitt rant about the awfulness of this cover, check out her article on ShelfTalker.
