I’ll be doing a virtual launch of View from Pagoda Hill at the Westport Library in April 2021. Details coming soon!
Freedom’s Price has been awarded the Honorable Mention by the Grateful American Prize.
Here’s the criteria:
The GRATEFUL AMERICAN™ BOOK PRIZE is the only award for excellence in writing, storytelling and illustration for children’s historical non-fiction and fiction focused on the events and personalities that have shaped the United States since the country’s founding.
I’m so flattered to say that this is the second time one of my books has been so honored. Last year, The Revelation of Louisa May was the recipient.
I belong to a writers’ group on Facebook and one day the topic was “Google Alerts.” I had noticed that my alerts seemed to have gotten less and less effective. Someone mentioned Mention.com. I tried it out for free and found all sorts of things I’d missed about myself. This lovely site is called Women You Should know and it thinks everyone should get to know me!
I just heard that The Revelation of Louisa May has been selected as an Honorable Mention to the very first Grateful American Book Prize. The prize is meant to highlight books that feature American historical protagonists in engaging ways for kids. I’m definitely pleased about this one!
When I was researching The Revelation of Louisa May, I spent a lot of time in Concord. The Concord Bookshop was a delightful place to visit and a useful place for me to do research. I can’t wait to visit on Sunday, April 26th at 3:00. I’ll be reading a bit from The Revelation of Louisa May and signing. Please join me!
International Women’s month goes on! There’s a terrific website called Kidlit Celebrates Women’s History Month – they asked me to contribute a post about Louisa May Alcott. I wrote about her service in the Civil War. What I didn’t mention in the post is that when Louisa was ill with typhoid the doctors dosed her with mercury — a common remedy at the time. Most scholars believe that Louisa’s early death at 56 was due to heavy metal poisoning — so she continued to sacrafice for her country. Check out the blog post here.
I’ve written a post about Louisa May Alcott’s particular practical feminism. Check it out at E. Kristin Anderson’s blog, Write All the Words. I talk about the real life Marmee and Louisa’s relationship with her.
Giveaway ends March 15, 2015.

I’ll be signing Rory’s Promise at Barnes and Noble in Westport CT on Wednesday Dec 6 at 3:30. We’ll also be supporting Staples High School. I hope to see you there!
